Early Childhood Care and Development for Children in the Age Group Birth-3 Years

Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) refers to a comprehensive approach that focuses on the well-being, growth, and learning of children during their formative years—specifically from birth to three years old. This critical period lays the foundation for a child’s physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development. ECCD encompasses various aspects, including health, nutrition, education, and responsive caregiving.

Despite the critical importance of ECCE, UNESCO data reveals that 1 out of 4 children aged 5 have never had any form of pre-primary education. This represents 35 million children worldwide who miss out on this foundational stage. Fragmented policies and insufficient funding contribute to disparities in access to quality ECCE.

Foundational Literacy and Numeracy

In India, elementary education has made significant strides toward universalisation. However, the spotlight has shifted from mere access to a more critical concern: the quality of teaching and learning. Despite this progress, persistent gaps persistently separate what children actually learn from what they should achieve at each grade level. These disparities are particularly pronounced among children from marginalised communities.

Livelihood and Skill Development

Despite efforts to promote inclusivity, persons with disabilities often encounter barriers when seeking employment. Discrimination, lack of accessible workplaces, and inadequate skill development programs contribute to their limited job prospects. Many employers hesitate to hire persons with disabilities due to misconceptions about their capabilities.
